What an amazing inspirational speech. That’s the thought I was left with after watching this video of Alex Evans giving a lecture on his view of the gaming industry and where he thinks it should be headed. I think his view on how we need to be able to fail quickly is dead on and I have actually gotten a chance to experience this just last night in the beta. Thanks to the new tools that allow you to quickly (more quickly than LBP1) preview what you are doing, or allow you do mask or unmask layers so you can build something without worrying about keeping access to what is behind what you are making, you truly can fail quickly so that you can quickly start to figure out where you went wrong. This is the greatest advantage LBP2 has for the creators as it will allow us to spend less time frustratingly trying to figure out what went wrong and rather spend more time on figuring it out. I can’t stress how much this will help me in my creative process because of my love for efficiency, or should I say my hate for inefficiency!

Another strong point to mention is how Alex believes it is inevitable for the creators to start forming teams, maybe not in exclusive terms such as developer studios, but rather teams of creators who love creating different aspects of games. Imagine a level collaboratively created by some of the most enthusiastic music, level, character, voice and logic designers. We’re already seeing great things through the beta and I imagine once those people get together it will surpass all expectations. I know I’ve already got a shortlist of friends who can do hilarious voices lined up so I can slave-labor them into bringing my characters to life! Now I just need to find someone who’s really good with logic… Hrm, hint hint…

Anyway enough of me rambling on about the merits of this speech, go watch it! It’s really worth the time and if you’re an aspiring game designer, pay attention to the Q&A at the end where Alex will give you some pro-tips about how to set yourself apart and show your true worth.
